What Did Jesus Do? No. 5 He Demonstrates How to Respond to Criticism

We've all had our try at responding to criticism. It seems no matter what choices we make, there is someone waiting to criticize and judge. That's not to say than any of us are above criticism or that there is no benefit to listening and discerning when it comes our way. The cold truth is that much that is offered even as helpful criticism is just a veiled attempt to frustrate and discourage.

The passage we will be discussing is in Luke 7 where the antagonists accuse Jesus of being a glutton and drunkard. Let's examine Jesus' response and see what he did. Once again, his actions are impressive and instructive.

Seeing the Face of Jesus as the Light - Gary Cleveland with Matthew Cleveland

This podcast is the result of a collaborative effort between Gary and his son Matthew. Matt is an elementary school art teacher in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Over the past few years has created a series of "Jesus" drawings at youth rallys and special services. He begins with a blank canvas and sketches as I preach a sermon based in the Gospel of John and select passages from 1 John.

I encourage the listener to consider who their personal view/understanding of the Savior becomes more detailed in time. Consider how we come to know Jesus incrementally as if one brush stroke or scratch of the charcoal at a time.

What Did Jesus Do? No. 2 He Specialized in Restoration

Many of the activities of Jesus are centered around miraculous works. No doubt, the miracles of Jesus loom large in the acts of mercy he administers during his earthly ministry. This series will focus on some of what might be referred to as ordinary, even though extraordinary.....things Jesus did.

Today we look at the last few verses of the Gospel of John where Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. 3 times the question is asked. Jesus affirms Peter and sets the stage for the early period of the church. It might not be a miracle, but these verses and the action of Jesus illustrated here, provide the foundation for the next big chapter in the playing out of God's story. In Acts 2 and following we will see the great importance of what Jesus does here with Peter's affirmation.

The Church, Missional

Does the church have a mission? OR Does God have a mission and the church plays a role in the carrying out of that mission? Admittedly, this question could get bogged down in semantics, but I think there is something worth considering.

The church follows closely the style of Jesus in responding to needs and crises. There is no doubt that Jesus had a strategic plan and the early church had goals and purposes. But time after time, Scripture shows that the church, like Jesus, was a response organism.

Listen in today and explore this idea. Your ideas and feedback are always appreciated. Thanks for being a part of our podcast family.

What Did Jesus Do? No. 1 Jesus As Crisis Responder - Luke 9: 10-17

Jesus specialized in responding to a crisis. From his first miracle in Cana of Galilee, he calmly handles crisis after crisis in his ministry. Miracles are often a part of the story. No matter what the circumstance, Jesus draws others into the story. On each occasion there is frequently found these three: Prayer, Planning and Participation.

In today's story of the feeding of the 5,000, we find Jesus at work responding to a crisis. Listen in as Josh Cleveland and Gary Cleveland have a conversation about the story and the many stories found within it. May this conversation lead to many others about the things Jesus did.....and continues to do.

<itunes:summary>Jesus specialized in responding to a crisis.

May this conversation lead to many others about the things Jesus did.....and continues to do.</itunes:summary>

David's Prayer 2 Samuel 7: 18-29

Prayer is often situational by nature. There are times when prayer is a crying out.....perhaps not even in words or phrases, but a groan. Sometimes prayer is a sustained plea for healing, or hope or direction. The prayer of David in 2 Samuel 7 is a prayer of looking back at what God has done, a current look at what God is in the process of doing and a look forward at all He will do in the future.

Today's lesson is coupled with a time of honoring a couple of recent graduates and an exhortation for all of us to focus on what God has done, is doing and will do, if we call upon Him as the one true God. Fresh horizons are always there when we focus on Him.

Hannah's Prayer - 1 Samuel 2: 1-11

The prayer of Hannah is rich in theological content and illustrates the highest respect for God and his ways. If this prayer sounds familiar, it might be because of the close parallels it has with Mary's Magnificat in Luke 1:46 and following. The prayer is also given in the form of song or poetry. It is a well constructed, highly contemplative prayer.

In this sermon, we will explore the idea of prayer being a part of action and willingness to participate in the agenda of God. It is my prayer that we will expand our idea of praying as a manner of speaking which can at times be unstructured or other times the result of thoughtful structure and organized reflection.

In A Manner of Speaking- Prayer No. 8 Nehemiah & God's Covenant of Love: Nehemiah 1: 5-11

This is a most unlikely text for a Mother's Day sermon.

Blushingly, I would admit that this is one of the more hair-brained ideas for a sermon I've ever tried to pull off. You can't blame me for trying the near impossible.....well....maybe you can.

Nehemiah offers a prayer to God asking for guidance in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. At this time, Israel is released following the period when Babylon destroyed the city and took many of Jerusalem's residents captive.

The re-building of the wall of Jerusalem forms the backdrop for the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Why is there so much ado about wall building? Are there deeper lessons at play here? Let's explore this together.

The promise of peace seems like a far reach. In fact, it might be out of reach for a time among those whose losses were so personal. In spite of the great pain and hurt, we yearn for comfort. In this passage in Numbers 6 we find God giving a blessing to his people as they leave Sinai for the promised land. The journey will not be easy. Great losses and sorrow will be sustained in the journey.

Nevertheless God promises that his face will shine upon them. His presence in their pain will make all the difference.

In A Manner of Speaking- Prayer No. 5 Elijah on Mount Carmel

There is so much drama in 1 Kings 18. Elijah is called upon to give testimony to the greatness of God. More specifically, he is to bring about a show down between the servants of Baal and the God of Israel. The event is filled with drama and a spectacular display of God's power. The prayer of Elijah is in contrast, very short and to the point especially when compared to the sideshow demonstrated by the Baal worshipers. If you haven't read this narrative in a while, I invite you to revisit the drama and demonstration of God's great power as you listen in.

We continue our series titled, "In a Manner of Speaking" today. We are exploring the ways we speak to God and how God hears us. The most common way we tend to identify as our communication to God, is prayer. We are reminded in today's lesson that God hears everything we communicate for better or worse. In today's text, we revisit the time of Israel after having been set free from Egyptian captivity. It didn't take long for Israel to forget all the wonder of God witnessed in the Exodus. Where do we find ourselves in this story? Listen along as we ponder this insightful and most meaningful text.

In A Manner of Speaking- Prayer No. 3 With Prayer and Report on Gary's fight with Cancer

This is perhaps as intimate a podcast as I have ever published. Prior to the sermon you will hear me speak of my ongoing battle with cancer. This past week Deb and I got the news that the Melanoma Cancer has spread to my liver and is inoperable. We will be going back to Mayo Clinic this week to find out what the treatment options are.

I appreciate all those who are praying for Deb and me. We could not ask for more comfort, confidence and companionship than you have all provided us.

The sermon is the third in the series on prayer. It is all about how our perspectives in life determine how we hear God and consequently, how we communicate with Him in our prayers. I find myself in a location that I would have never envisioned, yet I know God's presence is with me.

God is always speaking. Sometimes we can't hear him for the noise that bombards us from every corridor of our lives. In this series we are exploring how we can "tune in" better to what God is saying. Today we are examining a passage in Hebrews 1: 1-3. The writer of Hebrews emphasizes that God speaks to us today through Jesus, His son. The question we explore today regards how easy it is to use only the "sound clips" of Jesus which are most comfortable and edit the commands of Jesus which make us squirm just a bit.

Beginning with his birth announcement and his father's instructions about how John was to live, we observe that John is not your everyday, run of the day, Jewish boy. May the hearing of the voice of God give us clearer purpose, mission and meaning in our lives.

The Holy Spirit Brings Life, Inclusiveness and Encouragement - 1 Corinthians 14

All it takes is a reading of 1 Corinthians 14 verse 1 to point out a spiritual lacking in my life. Paul encourages the Corinthian church to "eagerly desire spiritual gifts". This seems odd when one considers the obvious abuses the Corinthian congregation had in regard to "self elevation" and particularly the boasting regarding who had the greater gifts etc.

Join me in looking at this passage as we continue to consider the work of God's Holy Spirit in our lives. I believe that as we become more eager to join in the Holy Spirit's agenda, we become a little more focused on bringing about God's will on earth as it is in heaven.

<itunes:summary>This lesson explores Ruth Chapter 4. The saga of Ruth and Naomi has now fully merged with the life of Boaz. We see in each of these characters, a willingness to think of the needs of others and make informed choices which will bring honor to God.

As noted previously, the book of Ruth yields considerable insight into the core features of the gospel as encountered in the New Testament. Listen along and consider the practical and lasting lessons to be learned in this short and all too often, marginalized book of the Bible. </itunes:summary>

In Chapter 3 of Ruth we encounter the continuing story of Ruth and Naomi. Naomi instructs Ruth to go to the place where Boaz is processing his grain harvest. Naomi's plan is to explore the possibility that Boaz would be agreeable to acting as the kinsman redeemer who would take Ruth as his wife and therefore, give her some long term security.

The story narrative exposes us to cultural practices that puzzle and intrigue the modern reader. As we have discovered in previous lessons, we find the book of Ruth to be insightful, inspirational and instructional. It is in many ways, as others have said, the "gospel according to Ruth".

Ruth No. 1 - Tragedy, Trouble and Turmoil Chapter 1

We explore today the first chapter of the book of Ruth. We consider the plight of Naomi, who has relocated to Moab with her family because of a famine in the region of their hometown of Bethlehem.

As is frequent with resident aliens, the clan of Naomi is soon faced with additional subsequent tragedies. She loses here husband and her two sons and is left alone with her two Moabite daughter in laws, Ruth and Orpah.

In this lesson, we observe the story of Ruth as being a story for all. It is sad, but true, that the book of Ruth has largely been ignored by most males. Though frequently occurring as a women's Bible study, it has been greatly marginalized. I want to suggest that the book of Ruth features some robust theology and themes for males and females.

Light, especially as used by the Apostle, John, in his writings, indicates illumination. It allows truth, reality to be seen.

There's a difference in taking a glance at Jesus and becoming mesmerized with him. In this series, I am encouraging listeners to observe Jesus in several portraits as offered by the various biblical images offered in scripture.

If we take a little extra time to observe Jesus, we will see him with more clarity. We will love him more and we will take upon ourselves His likeness with increasing measure. There is more than meets the eye or ear when we hear Jesus referred to as "the good shepherd". Look, listen, observe. I don't think you will come away disappointed in looking afresh at this most vivid portrait of the Christ as "the good shepherd".

Every stereotype is imaginable in the images brought to mind when someone says, "Jesus". Even scripture itself gives more than one portrait of the Christ. Join in as we begin a series of lessons on "Portraits of the Christ".

Today, we consider the term, "Lord". We'll use Acts 2: 22 - 47 as a textual anchor for our thoughts. </itunes:summary>

The Lamb's Supper - A focus on communion and the Lord's Supper

This podcast is more lengthy than usual. The entire service is focused around the taking of the Lord's Supper. Songs, Scriptures and the Sermon are woven together as a unit. As you listen, you will hear the singing, the reflections and the scripture readings.

The worship committee had asked me if I would be willing to lead the songs as well as do the message. I gladly accepted the challenge. I had no idea how inadequate I would feel as I conducted the service. What follows is a service with all the genuine, human frailties clearly displayed as our church worships, communes and reflects together. I pray for your blessing as you listen in.

Mark's Introduction to Jesus

The gospel account of Mark is notable for its quick paced narrative. "Forget the genealogies, and pardon me for not giving a version of the birth narrative", Mark might say. "Time is of the essence and I need to get to the heart of the message of Jesus".

Mark introduces Jesus as the full grown, freshly baptized Messiah which his hearers needed to hear about. Notice the term "hear about". The gospels were intended to be read aloud to hearers who were facing impending persecution and having their lives "ripped apart" by cataclysmic shifts in society and world order.

Sometimes we need to hear Jesus introduced without the manger, the wise men and the star. Peace and good will to men is the offer of God, but first the world must be shaken, torn and restored again. Mark is up to something astounding in his gospel. Listen in as we explore Mark's unique and challenging introduction to Jesus.

This time of year we hear the story of the birth of Jesus told with all its wonder, splendor and drama. I never get tired of hearing how God came near through Jesus.

Sometimes, however, in our hurry to get to the shepherds, wise men and babe in the manger, we forget the genealogy which serves as a backdrop to the birth narrative. Matthew is one of the gospel accounts where we find the genealogy of Jesus.

Listen along as we explore this often overlooked and unfortunately "throw-away" passages. I promise not to get too bogged down in details. We'll take a bird's-eye view of how Matthew chooses to introduce the Messiah.

Then, go ahead and treat yourself to a reading of the thrilling birth story which follows.

The Jacob Chronicles Pt. 1

Does God bless those who don't measure up to his standards? According to Matthew 5: 45, God causes the sun to shine on all and rain to fall upon the righteous and unrighteous. That said, one is still amazed at the narrative of Genesis 27 where Jacob obtains Isaac's blessing through deception and lies.

This lesson explores the fact that God sees us as He desires us to be and allows for every opportunity for us to grow and transform into His likeness. He is not soft on sin but He is indeed, patient and desirous to see all come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

The Isaac Chronicles - Survey of Genesis 11-24

This lesson is a brief overview of the events and circumstances surrounding the life of Isaac. Admittedly, this sermon covers far more material than should be attempted in a single lesson. The intent however, is to offer a link between several events and personalities which can often become isolated from the main story line of Genesis.

God is always doing something and is headed in a purposeful direction. The events of Genesis serve to remind us that God is at work in the everydayness of life. Considering these biblical events leads us to ask, "what is God up to in my life?" and "Where is all this leading?"

Just how do we describe the events of Genesis 3? Many Bibles will have a paragraph heading which reads something like "The Fall of Man" or something like that. Today's lesson will explore the idea that such descriptions may very well do an injustice to the greater implications of this important text. I am indebted especially to Walter Brueggemann for his insights and suggestions found in his commentary on Genesis.

While I stop short of completely rejecting the idea that Genesis 3 concerns the fall of man to sin, I would insist that there are other very important ideas which also need to be observed.

This is the first in a series of two lessons on the Lord's Prayer. It seems that among evangelicals, we don't give the Lord's Prayer as prominent a place as it deserves. Often when it is prayed, it can tend to be recited in ways that betray its extreme significance. Close examination will show this prayer to be a paradigmatic shift in the way people would pray from that time on.

Even closer examination will show this prayer to be a clear, concise and comprehensive statement of God's work on earth through his people. As disciples, we will find in this prayer a call not only worthy of our reciting but one which bids us to reflect and to respond.

Somewhere Between Faith and Love.....there is Hope - 1 Corinthians 13:13

This is the third in our series of four lessons on the theme of HOPE. Today we observe the triad of "Faith,Hope and Love" as referenced in 1 Corinthians 13. Among other questions we consider today where our hope comes from. What "in-forms" our hope?

All too often we lose our sense of optimism and expectancy in life because we are focused on the temporary, the material and the secular. Some studies by neuroscientists even suggest that our brains may very well be changed as we consider the reality of something beyond our selves. In fact, those same studies seem to indicate that we may very well be limiting our potentials by rejecting the possibility of a force, a power, a Personality outside ourselves.

Can faith in God alter the way we view the universe? I'll leave that up to you to decide. This lesson only touches upon a few ideas which might warrant further investigation and critique.

There is found within the Magnificat (Mary's Song) a marvelous summation of theology and testimony to the activity of Jehovah God in the affairs of mankind. Consider now, these words and be ready to be impressed with Mary's grasp of God's divine agenda. </itunes:summary>

Introduction to Esther

The book of Esther is one of the most intriguing of Biblical books. The narrative of the book is comedy, tragedy and romance. The story occurs in the citadel of Susa, in Persia....far from the city of Jerusalem. God is not mentioned by name. No prayers are recorded. And yet, somehow, the reader who ponders and searches will see evidence of God throughout the story in sometimes surprising ways.

There is perhaps in Esther, a foreshadowing of the day in which Jerusalem would no longer be the epicenter of God's work. We might sense a great wind of change is in the air. The Spirit of God moves in a mysterious way. There are indeed powerful lessons to be learned in the reading of Esther and the telling of her story.

Perhaps we will all find a little of ourselves in this story.

The key to living with the Kingdom mindset, is found in the phrase, "It's not all about me".

Much of 2 Corinthians is filled with Paul's response to those who were seeking to discredit him. He appeals not on the basis of PRIDE but PAIN. In the passage under discussion today, he makes his appeal....not on his THIRD HEAVEN experience but his THORN experience.

The most important consideration for Paul is not, whether he will ever get these prideful people to accept him, but whether he can create in them the culture of accepting one another. The success of God's work among them is dependent on the transformation of their hearts.

What A Fool Believes - 2 Corinthians 11: 16-33

The apostle Paul was never one to proclaim the Word of God for a fee.

Corinth was known for giving a strong emphasis to the externals. In 1 Corinthians, Paul had spent no little effort to straighten them out about the way they were using spiritual gifts as a way to "self-elevate" themselves over fellow Christians. They even thought that the person who baptized them somehow gave them a higher status than others.

Paul is in the midst of a struggle to re-instill confidence in his authority as an apostle. In his own words, he says in verse 16, "Let no one take me for a fool..." He then proceeds to win the confidence of his Corinthian antagonists by playing to his "weak" suit.

Instead of citing his many accomplishments and doing "self-promotion", he cites the trials he had endured. He points to the very criteria that some were using to substantiate their theory that Paul could not possibly be blessed of God while having all the bad things happen to him. Paul's boasting is based upon "weakness" (11:30). He would write these words to the Galatians in 6:17..." I bear on my body the marks of Jesus"....

For Paul, respect comes only with courageous, unselfish, unflinching sacrifice. Be ready to be humbled, to be awed, to learn from a true servant what being a disciple is all about.

Paul continues his appeal to the Corinthians to reconsider the basis on which his authority as apostle has been brought into question. He asserts that God calls for continual growth in faith. (2 Cor. 10:15) He is aware that any rejection he is experiencing runs deeper than just his own concerns. He calls them to make a shift from their present conduct of "boasting" to that of "boosting".

In other words, he calls them...... and us to expand upon our faith, extend our willingness to accept others and examine our attitudes toward others.

The Epicenter of Grace - Overview of 2 Corinthians 6-9

With Oakhaven's recent Guest speakers and special events we got behind in our schedule of 2 Corinthians sermons. In order to get back on schedule, this is an attempt to give a summary of the ideas of chapters 6-9. In retrospect, I don't recommend efforts to summarize such a block of material. It just doesn't do justice to the robust theological and practical import of this pathos-filled section of Paul's writings.

I encourage the listener to listen to this sermon with open Bible. Many ideas are far deeper than I have explored here. The title I have chosen for this overview is "The Epicenter of Grace". If we look to the very center, the very core of God's grace, we find it is simply summarized with the word "GIFT" and that is indeed what Grace means. At the Epicenter of Grace is....A GIVER.

Unclaimed Treasure - 2 Corinthians 4: 7-18

There is a grand consistency in the way God works. From the choosing of Abraham to the emergent nation of Israel, God has brought significance to the ordinary. Jesus is born, not to royalty but to the working class. Jesus hails from a small town and assembles a group of fishermen and otherwise inconsequentials to become his first disciples.
God takes ordinary containers and displays His nature in extraordinary ways.
In 2 Corinthians 4: 7-18 Paul describes God's wonder as being dispensed from clay pots. We are, Paul says, the container of the wonder of God. When our lids are opened it will be observed just what this "treasure" is. "We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus..."
Who in the world would think of death as a treasure? The answer is: only those who see death as the way to finally and permanently attain life.
Irony.....Godly consistent irony.

Joys of A Kingdom Centered Marriage

Paul's prayer in Colossians 1 is an encompassing expression of desire for God's blessings in every facet of their lives. 1:10 expresses it this way: "And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work..."

Later in this letter...3:18-20, Paul specifically appeals to God's people to show in their homes and their marriages that God and his kingdom is at the center of their identities.

The good work of having a good marriage is a kingdom matter. A good and Godly outcome will come to every corner of life where God is placed first. Marriages are no different. Consider how God's reign at the center of your life is your primary source of empowerment in maintaining a marriage that brings honor to God.

<itunes:summary>Paul's prayer in Colossians 1 is an encompassing expression of desire for God's blessings in every facet of their lives.

</itunes:summary>

A Beautiful Thing - Mark 14: 1-11

We all know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge in the Christmas Story and how he spoke with disdain over the joy and giving of Christmas. Through his eyes, the idea of giving things away was a reckless and foolhardy way to allocate one's resources. Much like the "Bah-Humbug!" of Scrooge, was the response of the disciples who witnessed the anointing of Jesus in Mark 14. They didn't get it. But the woman in this story did get it.

The beauty of this moment is that it was never meant to make sense in the economy of this world. It only made sense to one with Kingdom eyes. Such was the insight of this woman who broke open the ababaster jar and in one simple gesture conveyed the gospel message with such beauty and simplicity, it continues to be told and re-told through the generations.

Witness Between Us - A song by Josh Cleveland

Last Sunday was our annual Oakhaven "Unplugged" outdoor service. I didn't think to get a recording device for the sermon. But that's just as well. I have something special for you. This podcast is a song by my youngest, Josh Cleveland. It's titled "Witness Between Us". I would classify it as a modern day lament of sorts. A song about not settling for faith that doesn't stand the test. "I ain't quitt-n Jesus", the song says. And I won't settle anymore for any hallelujahs which don't mean anything.

My sermon last Sunday was from the text of Matthew 5:14-16 about putting our light out there where it can be seen by all. Josh's song is just that. It's a light giving illumination so others can see. Well done, son of mine.

The earliest of Christians were known......not so much by their name.....as their lifestyle. These earliest believers cared for one another. They were "family" in the truest sense of the word. They celebrated and "testified to the resurrection". (Acts 4:33) They realized that Jesus gave up His life for them and the Father gave it back to Him in the resurrection.

They understood that "giving up" was a standard God Himself demonstrated and they took it upon themselves to imitate Him. They sought to be a people "called out" to "give up". Those of us who are Christians today would do well to imitate these early believers.

In Exodus 19, Moses instructs Israel to prepare to hear God's voice. From Mount Sinai comes smoke, light and the voice of God. "...the people will hear me speaking with you..." records, Exodus 19:9. In chapter 20 we have the content of that conversation. We still hear that conversation echoing today...if we listen. It is the law of God, that is certain....but it is more...it is the WISDOM OF GOD....for the ages. God's divine agenda was more than just freeing a people from Egyptian slavery. He was preparing a people. We continue to receive the call to be holy. The echo of these words still reverberates in this present age for all to hear.
